Christmas Shoeboxes

October 21, 2010

Filling a shoebox for Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child is probably the one thing I've wanted to do consistently since I was a teenager. No, I haven't done it every single year, but it's something I strongly consider.

I think it's a great opportunity to get kids involved in giving and thinking about other people. This year, we grabbed two boxes from church. I got Nathan involved right from the beginning, starting with assembling the box. He loved putting the box together - it must be a boy thing.

We went around our condo and collected all the stuff we had bought or received but never got around to using. There's so much we've been holding on to that other people can actually put to good use.

Then, last night, we brought Nathan to Dollarama (yay, dollar stores!) and asked him to choose 10 things. We were packing the boxes for two little girls and Nathan took good care choosing things that girls would use. I thought it might be a little challenging for him, seeing as how he really doesn't have any experience with "girl stuff" but he did a pretty good job.

He got some hair clips, hair elastics, pink balls (because "girls like pink"), pencil crayons and some other fun and useful things.

When we got home, he divided everything up between the two boxes. Of course, if there was only one of something, it went into "his" box. The girl who gets that box is going to be really happy!

I have a feeling this isn't going to be the first time he makes a girl feel really special!!
