Now For A Bit Of Wisdom
July 23, 2008
For whatever reason, my body has decided that now, exactly 10 days before my wedding, would be a good time for a little bit of wisdom to spring up. The wisdom, of course, has to be the most painful type, coming out in the form of a wisdom tooth.
All my other wisdom teeth have already come in and for some reason, this one decided to wait and wait until now. And now that it's coming out, it's coming out loud. I have never felt so much pain in my mouth! I was lucky enough to have my teeth come in straight so extractions weren't required.
I woke up this morning barely able to swallow. I was almost certain that I was coming down with strep throat (as I do quite frequently) but fortunately it's not (cross your fingers). I know it's going to go away soon, but the one thing that's really bothering me about this is that I can barely open my mouth big enough to fit a big, juicy dumpling in!
I'm hungry.

Allergic To Exercise
May 22, 2008
After watching episodes of The Last 10 Pounds and Bulging Brides today, I was somewhat inspired to start exercising again (hah, who am I kidding.. to start exercising at all).
So, we got Nathan all dressed up to go downstairs to the gym. I got Andrew to do his whole boot camp assessment on me. I'm not sure what his initial thoughts are, but after jogging for 12 minutes (which I'm pretty proud of), my body started to retaliate. He must be pretty bummed that his fiancee is so out of shape.
I believe my body has an overactive immune system and anything that can be a threat to it (actual or not), my body will fight it (see, I'm a natural fighter). And to my body, the scientific wonder that it is, believes that exercise is a threat.
So here I am, drowsy from Benedryl, wondering if I'll make it into the gym again tomorrow for another day of self-imposed bridal boot camp. I'll keep you posted.

Favourite Things Friday: Pilates
March 7, 2008
... more specifically, the 10-minute pilates videos on YouTube!
I've never done pilates before but Alison invited me to try it out a while ago so, here I am. I've taken to rolling out my yoga pilates mat recently because I have a horrible back and I've learned in my Low Back Disorders class that muscle endurance will help reduce pain. So, I've been trying to strengthen my back and work on toning my body at the same time (helloo! honeymoon coming up!). These videos are great for me because I can do a quick workout session as a break during my long nights of studying! Plus I feel great after, too.

Satin Hands
November 21, 2007
I love work! I never thought I'd say that right now, seeing as how I have two jobs and they both involve me being a lab monkey to grad students. But, today while I was waiting for my next participant to come in, a girl from across the hall came in and asked me if I could help her with her homework. Guess what her homework was.
Kelly's apparently a Mary Kay consultant and her homework was to show 20 women a new hand product. It's called Satin Hands Pampering Set. So basically all I had to do was wash my hands, rub the paraffin wax cream into my hands, then an exfoliating hand scrub, then finish it off with a hand cream. I'm really excited about my hands right now because they feel so smooth (and so unlike my normal Waterloo-dried hands) and not to mention they smell nice too.
If anyone's up for it, she offered to do some skin care or glamour parties for me and a couple friends. Let me know and maybe we can set something up. There's nothing like a good pampering during exam time. Think about it girls, then let me know!

Geri Abs
November 12, 2007
My sister volunteered to drive me back to Waterloo this weekend just for the chance to go shopping in Cambridge. The outlets in Cambridge have some ridiculously low prices on decent items (and I know this because Kat and I went almost every week for 10 months straight). The only downside is that most of the pants left (at Suzy Shier) are size 0 or 00.
By the time we got to Suzy Shier, the change rooms were closed so she either had to buy pants without trying them on, or find some way to try them on without the privacy of a change room. So, my sister being the toothpick she is, decides to slip the size 00 pants on over the pants she's wearing just to make sure they'll fit alright. She's just that tiny *mumble*mumble*.
Anyway, so after being completely demoralized and walking out of the story empty handed, I've decided that maybe it's time for me to try just a little bit harder at losing this extra bulk. I mean, for the longest time, my excuse was having Nathan. It was a pretty lame excuse seeing as how there are many moms out there with great bodies - for example, Geri Halliwell (have you seen the new Spice Girls video?)
Plus, after walking up 10 flights of stairs this morning, I was completely out of breathe. So from now until my Christmas break, it is my goal to fix this little fat/unfit problem.

Moose's Femur Fracture
October 19, 2007
Today as I was cleaning my room, I found Moose in a dire need for medical attention. Moose is one of Nathan's favourite toys. Luckily, I was able to tape him to stabilize the limb for now. More intensive procedures will have to be performed later, when I get my hands on some crazy glue. Poor Moose.
Dx: Complete femoral fracture.
MOI: Significant direct trauma to femur bone of right thoracic limb, medially.
S/S: The leg has been completely severed. Patient seems unfazed, only nodding occasionally (he's so tough).
Tx: Immediate immobilization of limb. ORIF using crazy glue. Post-surgery immobilization with brace.
Px: A partial recovery is expected after rehabilitation. Stability will never be the same again.
Note: None of the above is medically sound. This is just a result of residual information from hardcore studying for my injuries course.

Just Breathe
October 2, 2007
Anyone who knows me knows that my immune system is like those 70-year-old security guards, it's just there for show. Every fall since first year, when I move back into Waterloo, I develop a nasty lung infection. This year, I thought I was lucky. I wasn't going to develop a nasty lung infection - I was strong! Well, I was partially right. I didn't get a lung infection. No, this year, my the disease dispensing centre in my lungs decided to finish strong (after all, it is my last fall in Waterloo) and hit me with 'almost pneumonia' instead.
After waiting three hours to see the on-call doctor at health services, I got these. With any luck, I'll be breathing normally again by this weekend. Yay drugs.

Mysterious Spots
September 19, 2007I finally got around to going to the gym this morning. It really helps that the gym is right beside where I have my first class and that a bunch of my friends are also going at the same time. I felt pretty good working out this morning and the walk home was nice and relaxed. The air was crisp and the sun was just starting to warm the air up.
I got home and jumped into the shower and when I got out, I was surprised (as in I actually gasped and said "oh mi gosh!") when I looked down at my arms to see these red spots all over them. I checked the rest of my body for more and they were scattered all over my legs as well.
I don't know where they came from and I don't know what they are. They're not really itchy (or else I would have noticed them before I looked) and they're not really bumpy either (maybe slightly raised). They don't really bother me. They're just ugly.
It's a little worrisome I suppose and I can't help but think that maybe the family of the spider I got Jacqueline to kill for me last night attacked me last night in revenge and now I have hundreds of tiny spider dots covering my skin. If anyone knows what these are or how to get rid of them, please tell me. Otherwise, I'll stick to my story - I'm almost 100% certain they're spider attack marks anyway ;).

It's A Little Bit Funny
August 14, 2007
I find it a little ironic that the moment I decide to use the bathroom more frequently is around the same time I develop a bladder infection. Yes, the first three days of my official summer vacation were spent battling it out with this infection (told you it was bad!).
Saturday night I thought I was going to die. See, watching all those medical shows gives me a little bit of authority in the diagnosis field. So, I was pretty sure that I had gone past the stage of bladder infection, onto the more serious kidney infect and over the course of the night, my kidneys would shut down and I would die. I even called the public health nurse. She told me to go to a walk-in clinic the next day.
Sunday, I didn't actually get to go to the walk in clinic because I forgot to check if it was open and I had to pack up all my junk to go home. The ride home was by far the most uncomfortable car ride I have ever taken in my entire life. I felt nauseous, had a headache and I really had to pee. Anyway, we got to the restaurant (to have dinner with Andrew's cousin because he's leaving for Germany soon) where Andrew's mom confirmed my self-diagnosis (well, the first part of it - bladder infection). I spent the rest of the night drinking lots of water.
Monday - I decided to finally go to the doctor's. He wrote me a prescription for my infection and then told me to get my blood tested. I finally got the medicine thinking I was finally going to start feeling better. Then, an hour later, I couldn't breathe. So, being the newly pro-active person I am, I went back to the pharmacy who (because she's so darn useful) told me to go to the hospital (she told me this last time too, and likely the time before that as well. Ugh). I told my sister to drive ma and she told me to wait til she was done making her ice cream sandwiches (because, around here, we think we're invincible - food has priority). Then, I called my doctor who was equally as helpful. He asked if I had allergies to medication and I said, not that I know of, and he said, then I can't tell you what's wrong. Well, duh! If I knew what it was, I wouldn't have to call you!
However, I am glad to announce that I am feeling much better, aside from the frequent need to run to the bathroom. I also think that the Big Guy up there has quite a sense of humour.
