Zoom-Zoom

January 17, 2011

Andrew and I had no car-buying experience when we first arrived. We had a general idea of what we wanted, and I figured that was good enough. We walk in, tell them what we want, how much we want to spend and the salesperson will pull out a car that fits our description. Then, we'll pay and drive off the lot happy as can be, right? Wrong.

Bright-eyed, but slightly jet-lagged, we began our search on our second day here. We didn't end up finding a car we liked, but we did manage to survive a couple test-drives. And by survive, I mean we managed to do a run on the highway and city roads without getting into an accident or honked at.

By the second day, we were exhausted from dealership-hopping and dealing with overeager salespeople. We arrived at the Mazda dealership shortly after lunch time. We hadn't eaten which made me more tired and irritable.

It just so happened that Mazda offers free food. So, we had lunch courtesy of Mazda. Then, found the "perfect" car that suited our needs. We put down a deposit shortly after and were supposed to pick up the car a couple days later.

Then the flood came. Roads were flooded. People couldn't get to work. And our pick-up date kept getting pushed further and further back.

Now, finally, after a week and a half of waiting, we finally picked up our Mazda 6! What a relief it is to finally cross off one of the larger items on our list of things to do.

We have a car!

Go Gecko Go!

January 15, 2011

I was sitting in my bed today, minding my own business, feeding little Caleb when all of a sudden, I saw a dark figure out of the corner of my eye. The dark figure moved quickly across the wall beside me and at once I realized it was a gecko!

Immediately, I yelled "Sound the alarm! Our security has been breached! Wildlife has made its way into our home!"

The humongous gecko inched closer and closer towards me. I couldn't move. Poor little Caleb was still eating. There was no way I could manoeuvre him and myself away from the gecko fast enough without interrupting Caleb's eating.

Andrew rushed in to see what the commotion was all about but once he set eyes on the gecko, he ran out of the room screaming.

I was left all alone. It was just me and Caleb against the gecko. This giant, humongous, mutated-because-of-the-flood gecko.

After a short while, when Caleb and I had finally made our way out of the danger zone, Andrew gingerly crept back into the room, caught the gecko in a paper bag and set it free, back into the wild, on the other side of our balcony screen door.

Today. January 13.

January 13, 2011

Today was the first day I've been outside since we've arrived and it wasn't raining or cloudy. Thank God for fresh air and sun shine. I was starting to go crazy.

Today, we were informed that the place we fell in love with and was told we'd be able to rent, was this close to buying appliances and other things for, was no longer available. The owners decided that just in case their other home was flooded, they would keep this property for them to move in to. Of course, they were making all these decisions from their other home in Belgium. All the way from Belgium, they were ruining our plans. When we were first told the news, my first thought was "are you kidding me?!" followed closely by "what kind of a sick joke is this?!" and some choice words may have floated around my head. But at the end of the day, there's nothing more we can do about it so we've moved on and started looking for another place to stay.

Today, we finally got our power back for more than a couple hours. Over the past few days, we've been out of power for a large chunk of the day. Our electricity has been spotty and we've been trying to conserve laptop battery for when the power comes back on so house-hunting and e-communication has been slow.

Today, the flood waters have been receding significantly. We've been watching the open field from our living room window. In the morning, it was quite flooded and it was expected to peak around 4pm this afternoon but right now, it's almost all gone!

They say that tomorrow, businesses will be back up and running so we're hoping that tomorrow, we'll be able to start looking for a place to live again. Then, maybe we won't feel so displaced and desperate. Then, maybe we can start building up our new lives in our new home.

Stay Tuned!

January 9, 2011

I haven't had a chance to post blogs over the past couple of days. We've been running around a lot, trying to get things done and trying to settle in, but I have loads to share!

With a few more things crossed off our to-do lists, I should have a few spare minutes here and there to write up some posts so expect some to be popping up soon!

Start of a New Year

January 5, 2008

Since arriving back home, our days have revolved around our little boy's sleeping patterns which slightly resembles living in HK time. It's five days into the new year and I still haven't done a new year's post but I suppose that's forgivable (right?). I'll just do a quick catch-up post to cover what we've been doing since the clock struck 12 on January 1st. We missed New Year's twice this year - first time on the plane (according to HK time) and the second time in Vancouver. Most of the time was spent taking care of a very tired and angry 21 m.o. or sleeping. We spent New Year's Day at the airport, waiting for our new flight because the one we had booked mysteriously vanished. Other than that, I've been...

Reading: The Namesake

Andrew picked this up for me at Vancouver Airport after I realized that Nathan tends to sleep for most of the plane ride (lucky us!) and I had just finished reading the Penelopiad. It has been quite enjoyable so far. I find I really enjoy reading about other cultures.

Shopping: Whenever possible

To make up for the lack of shopping I had done in Hong Kong, we went to Vaughan Mills and did a little make-up shopping. We also headed over to fix up our Wedding Registry a little and because I was in a rush and slightly indecisive, I scanned three KitchenAid Stand-Up Mixers so I could decide on the colour later. But now, I have to wait a week or two for them to actually fix it because apparently the lady who was helping me was incapable of updating the correct registry for me.

Wedding Stuff Planning: Just odds and ends

We were able to score a few good deals (and one not-so-good deal) on some wedding stuff while in HK which helped me feel a little more productive. Yesterday, we met with our photographers (but forgot to pay our deposit) and updated our registry. Now I have a few more important things to worry about. I plan on designing the invitation before the end of January and I have a dress shopping trip planned with my side of the bridal party. Whee!

That is all I have to say.

Free Rice

November 20, 2007

When I went into work today, my boss showed me this super-addictive site called Free Rice. Someone out there has developed a game that lets you learn vocabulary (or test your vocabulary skills. I know, really nerdy right?) while donating food to help end world hunger. For each word you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated through the UN World Food Program.

Nicole, my boss, says it's an excellent aid for anyone who needs to study for the GRE. She also mentioned that it's probably impossible for anyone to get to level 50. Apparently she played all weekend and the highest she's gotten is level 45 (but keep in mind she studied long and hard for the GREs). I challenge all you out there to see how high you can get and let me know! And even if you suck at it, at least you're donating food to hungry people!

NaBloPoMo 2007

November 6, 2007

In keeping with my goal to blog more regularly, I've decided to step it up a notch and give NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) a try. So hopefully for the entire month of November, there will be something new here every day! (Feel free to give me ideas of what I should blog about. I'm going to need them.)

On another note: OH MI GOSH IT SNOWED TODAY!

Spice Up Your Life

November 2, 2007

My Spice Girls tickets are here! All four of them arrived safely contained within two little inconspicuous brown envelopes. Whoohoo!

Survivor

August 12, 2007

I did it, I am done. I have survived the most brutal 5 days of my life. Never have I been put through such mental and physical stress. To start things off, my exam schedule was brutal. It went a little like this: Wed (12:30pm), Fri (9am, 4pm), Sat (9am, 4pm). When I first found this out, I had a plan. I was going to start studying early. I was going to be productive. Then, things happened. I had papers to write and being at home more made it impossible to study.

So, I started studying for real on Tuesday. Yes, Tuesday. This week has been an intense week of memorizing material, forgetting material to memorize more material and (for my last exam), not bothering to study anymore.

In any case, some good has come out of this week. Not only did I test my super-hero abilities but since I was in such close proximity of a very clean washroom, I was able to go to the bathroom more often (sorry). This is a bit of an accomplishment for me because I have had a tendency to hold my pee in for inhumane amounts of time until my bladder would cry out for help. But not any more because, boys and girls, that is VERY BAD for you!

i'm

July 18, 2007

Has any one else noticed those little bubble letters "i'm" beside some of the names on their msn contact lists? I have. It stirred a little bit of curiosity in me but not enough to find out what it was all about. Then recently, in my conversation with a friend who happens to work at Microsoft, I finally found out (only because he had it in his name and usually he doesn't 'decorate' his name with nonsensical symbols).

Basically, "i'm" is a Microsoft initiative that shares some of the revenues they get from ads, with various charities. So as long as you have a certain tag in your name, for each message you send, Microsoft will donate a certain amount to the charity of your choice.

I figured this was a very easy way to help out a charity of my choice. I chose to support Komen for the Cure. Who will you support?
